Why choose a metal RV cover?
A permanent roof can reduce direct sun and precipitation on a parked vehicle while keeping the space open for everyday access. It is a shelter, not a weather-tight enclosure: wind-driven rain, dust and changing sun angles can still reach the vehicle.
Reduce direct weather exposure
Covered parking can shade roof surfaces and reduce direct rainfall on seals, finishes and accessories. Continue the inspection, cleaning and maintenance recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
Keep air moving
Open sides allow natural airflow around an RV or boat. They do not eliminate humidity, condensation or mildew; dry wet equipment and plan drainage around the storage area.
Make access part of the plan
Allow room for loading, opening doors and routine maintenance. Custom RV carports can be requested with appropriate clearance, but vehicle fit must be confirmed against the final framing and openings.
RV & boat shelter types
Motorhome covers
Class A, B and C motorhomes vary widely in size. Measure the actual vehicle rather than relying on the class designation. Include mirrors, ladders, roof equipment and space to open entry and compartment doors.
Fifth wheel & travel trailer covers
Measure with the trailer at its normal parking attitude. Include air conditioning units, vents, antennas and the fifth-wheel front profile. Plan tow-vehicle alignment, hitching space and the full turning path into the bay.
Boat covers
Measure a boat on its trailer from the tongue or coupler to the rearmost motor or attachment in its storage position. Include towers, T-tops and the windshield. Reserve room to uncover the boat, load gear and move safely alongside it.
Enclosed RV garages
Where an enclosed configuration is available, size the finished door opening and interior separately. Tracks, headers and bracing can reduce clearance. Plan ventilation, moisture control and access; see Metal Garages for enclosure considerations.
A tall shelter can serve either an RV or a boat when its actual clearance suits the stored equipment. The label “RV cover” alone does not establish a safe fit.
Popular RV cover sizes
Use these width × length examples to start a discussion, not as a list of guaranteed standard Steel South configurations. Vehicle dimensions, requested height, roof style, local loads and manufacturer availability determine which designs can be quoted.
Roof dimensions are not usable vehicle clearance. Posts, braces, side panels, roof overhangs and the selected configuration affect the clear space below. Confirm a dimensioned layout before ordering.
How to choose the right RV cover size
Start with measurements of the exact vehicle in the position in which it will be stored. Provide your measured vehicle envelope and your desired clearances separately so they can be checked against a proposed structure.
1. Overall length
Measure bumper to bumper, including ladders, spare tires, racks or a boat trailer’s tongue and outboard. Add the working space you need at both ends.
2. Width including mirrors
Record travel width at the widest point. Allow for mirrors and body movement during entry; do not size only from the body width in a brochure.
3. Maximum height
Measure from the prepared parking surface to the highest fixed point at the actual parking attitude. A change in grade can alter entry clearance.
4. Rooftop accessories
Include air conditioners, vents, satellite domes, antennas and solar equipment. Record both travel and intended parked positions where accessories move.
5. Slide-outs and awnings
Measure the fully deployed width and location of each slide-out if it must operate under the cover. Awnings need their own clearance envelope and may conflict with posts or side panels.
6. Maneuvering space
Map the driveway, turning radius, tow-vehicle path and space for hitching and unhitching. A vehicle that fits inside may still be unable to enter the site.
7. Roof overhangs
Ask where the advertised roof length begins and ends. An overhang adds coverage outside the frame, not usable distance between posts.
8. Clearance between supports
Request the clear width and height at the entry and along the parking bay, including braces, trim and any door hardware. Leg height alone does not answer these questions.
9. Future upgrades
Consider the dimensions of a likely replacement vehicle and future access needs. Confirm that the proposed building can accommodate them before ordering.
Before ordering: compare your measurements with the approved layout and actual clear openings. Ask Steel South to clarify any dimension that is shown only as roof size, nominal width or eave height.
Compare roof styles for an RV shelter
Regular roof
Rounded eaves create the traditional arched profile. Steel South’s regular roof panels run front to back. Length and regional limitations apply, so request confirmation for your proposed RV footprint.
Boxed-eave roof
A peaked A-frame profile gives a more conventional roofline. Steel South’s boxed-eave panels also run front to back; the appearance of a peaked roof does not mean the panels run down the slope.
Vertical roof
Panels run from the ridge toward the eaves, providing a direct downhill route for water and debris. Steel South uses hat-channel support in this system. Roof choice still requires review of the whole building, anchoring and local loads.
Steel South’s roof-style specifications list standard panel lengths and location-dependent limits, with custom lengths subject to request. Confirm the permitted style, length and height combination for your ZIP code. A vertical roof does not by itself establish a wind or snow rating.
For more on the established product options, see the Metal Carports roof-style guide.
Customize coverage around the way you travel
Dimensions and clearance
Request width, length and leg height based on the measurements above. Describe the minimum clear entry height you need in addition to any preferred leg height. Post and brace arrangements must be reviewed for the selected structure.
Panels, gables and enclosure
Ask about compatible side panels, gable ends and partial enclosure. These choices can reduce exposure from particular directions, but also change airflow, wind loading and the clearance around slide-outs or accessories. Do not remove bracing or add panels without manufacturer review.
Colors and trim
Explore available roof, side-panel and trim colors in the Steel South 3D designer. Verify current color choices and component availability with Steel South before finalizing the order.
Anchors and certified configurations
Anchoring must match the installation surface, site and approved design. Certified configurations and engineering documentation may be available for the applicable location and building. Request confirmation of the required loads, exposure conditions, enclosure and foundation as one package.
Site preparation & installation
Confirm the site before committing to preparation
Share the installation ZIP code, intended use, proposed surface and photos or a sketch of the approach. Provide access for the installation crew and materials, including gate width, overhead obstacles and working room around the footprint. Ask for the specific access and levelness requirements for your design.
Prepare a level, drained installation area
Concrete, gravel or ground installation may be appropriate depending on the building and site. Gravel is a surface treatment, not a structural anchor foundation. Steel South recommends concrete anchors for concrete and earth auger anchors for suitable ground installations, including soil or gravel. Confirm soil suitability and the approved anchoring method before work begins.
Arrange grading and drainage so water does not collect at the supports or beneath the vehicle. Confirm concrete dimensions, thickness and any required footings with the applicable plans before pouring. Site preparation responsibilities should be agreed before installation is scheduled.
Check permits and local design requirements
Contact your building and zoning authorities about permits, setbacks, easements and required drawings. Confirm local wind and snow requirements and any homeowner association rules. Installation readiness and an engineering package do not replace local approval.
Coordinate the order and installation
Steel South reviews your measurements and site information, confirms available options and prepares a custom quote. Final specifications and site requirements should be settled before ordering. Scheduling depends on the configuration, location, site readiness and manufacturer workload; request current guidance rather than relying on a fixed timeline.
Review the existing site preparation and installation guide for additional planning questions.
RV covers vs. enclosed RV garages
Open or partially enclosed cover
Suitable when shade, reduced direct weather exposure and frequent access are the priorities. Open sides support airflow and easy loading, while leaving the vehicle exposed to wind-driven weather and providing little access control. Side panels can change both exposure and clearance.
Enclosed RV garage
A compatible enclosure adds protection from more directions and can provide controlled access with appropriate doors and locks. It still needs ventilation, condensation planning and a suitable foundation. Door openings and operating hardware often become the critical fit constraints.
Choose around storage use, site rules and the dimensions of the actual vehicle. A garage can require different foundation, permit and engineering details from an open shelter; neither option is automatically suitable at every site. Compare Metal Garages and Metal Carports before deciding.
RV & boat cover questions
How tall should an RV carport be?
Measure the highest point of your vehicle, including roof equipment, on the intended parking surface. Then request a design with adequate clear entry and interior height. There is no single height that fits all RVs, and the listed leg or eave height may differ from the lowest obstruction.
What size RV cover do I need for a fifth wheel?
Use the trailer’s full length, widest travel dimension and maximum height, including the front profile and rooftop accessories. Add desired side access and deployed slide-out space. Share the towing approach and hitching needs so the footprint can be evaluated as a complete layout.
Can a metal RV cover be installed on gravel?
It may be possible with suitable ground conditions and manufacturer-approved anchors. Anchors engage the ground below the gravel; a layer of gravel alone does not establish capacity. Confirm surface, soil, drainage and local requirements with the proposed configuration.
Can I enclose the sides of my RV cover?
Compatible side panels or partial enclosure may be available. Include them in the initial design because enclosure changes wind loading and usable space. Have the manufacturer review any later addition before altering the shelter.
What roof style is best for an RV shelter?
Compare runoff direction, appearance, proposed dimensions and the options available at your location. Vertical panels run down the slope; regular and boxed-eave panels run front to back. The approved design and local requirements determine which combinations are suitable.
Can a metal RV cover accommodate slide-outs?
A design may accommodate them if their fully deployed positions clear posts, braces and panels. Measure each slide-out’s projection and position along the vehicle. Confirm the complete operating envelope instead of relying on nominal shelter width.
Can I store a boat under an RV cover?
Yes, when the boat-and-trailer dimensions and access requirements fit the reviewed design. Include the trailer tongue, motor position, tower or T-top and loading space. A tall roof alone does not guarantee sufficient width or length.
Do I need a permit?
Requirements vary by location, size and use. Ask your local building and zoning offices about permits, setbacks and required engineering documents before ordering. Verify any exemption rather than assuming it applies.
Are certified RV covers available?
Ask about the certified configurations and documentation available for your address and selected structure. Wind and snow compliance depends on the complete building, enclosure, anchors and foundation, as well as the applicable local requirements.
Can I customize the colors?
Ask about current roof, panel and trim colors for the selected design. Use the Steel South 3D designer to explore combinations, then confirm the available selections with Steel South.
Can I build an enclosed RV garage instead?
An enclosed configuration may be available where its dimensions and engineering requirements can be met. Verify the finished door opening, hardware clearances, ventilation and foundation. Compare our Metal Garages page and include enclosure preferences in your quote request.
How do I request a custom quote?
